Privacy Policy
Last updated:
The short version
- We collect your email address only when you give it to us (newsletter signup or event submission).
- We collect anonymous analytics on every visit (pages viewed, device type, referrer) via Google Analytics 4, proxied through our own server so your data doesn't leave us until needed.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your email address with anyone. Ever.
- We use cookies for site preferences (theme, saved events) and analytics. You can clear them at any time.
What we collect
Information you give us
When you subscribe to our newsletter, submit an event, or email us, we collect what you provide — most commonly your email address, sometimes your name and the name of an organization you represent.
Information collected automatically
When you visit our pages, our servers (and our analytics provider Google Analytics 4) log:
- The page you viewed and when
- The general region you visited from (state-level, not street-level)
- Your device type, browser, and screen size
- How you arrived (the link you clicked, the search query if Google passed it through)
- The time you spent on the page and what you clicked
This data is anonymous. We use it to understand what works, fix what doesn't, and decide what to cover.
Cookies + local storage
We use:
- Analytics cookies (Google Analytics 4, first-party, anonymized) — to count visitors and understand traffic patterns
- Functional storage (localStorage) — to remember your saved events and theme preference
- PWA storage — when you install our app, the browser caches our content for offline access
We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
What we do with what we collect
- Your email — to send you the weekly newsletter (if subscribed). You can unsubscribe in any issue.
- Analytics — internal use only, to improve the site
- Event submissions — to review and (if approved) publish the event
- Feedback + corrections — to follow up and fix things
Who else sees your data
The third parties we share data with are limited to:
- Google Analytics 4 — anonymized site traffic data
- Beehiiv — your email address, if you subscribed to the newsletter (Beehiiv is our email service provider; their privacy policy)
- Cloudflare — our hosting provider sees standard server access logs
We do not share your data with advertisers, brokers, or affiliate networks. We do not sell your data. We do not allow our analytics or email vendors to use your data for their own purposes.
Affiliate links
Some links on This Long Island are affiliate links — meaning if you click through and buy a ticket on Eventbrite, Ticketmaster, etc., we receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. These links are always tagged with a UTM parameter (so we can attribute the click) but no personal information is shared with the affiliate network beyond what they normally collect from any visitor. See our Affiliate Disclosure for details.
Your rights
- See what we have on you — email privacy@thislongisland.com and we'll send it.
- Delete it — same email. We'll delete your email from our list and zero out your analytics within 30 days.
- Unsubscribe — every newsletter has an unsubscribe link. Use it whenever you want.
- Stop being analyzed — enable "Do Not Track" in your browser, or use an ad blocker. We honor both.
California + EU residents
If you're in California (CCPA/CPRA) or the EU/UK (GDPR), you have additional rights — including the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data, and the right to object to processing. Email privacy@thislongisland.com and we'll honor any valid request within 30 days.
Children
We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has submitted information through our site, please email us and we'll delete it immediately.
Security
We use HTTPS everywhere, store passwords (when applicable) hashed and salted, and keep our email list with a SOC 2-certified provider (Beehiiv). No system is perfectly secure; if there is a breach affecting your data, we'll notify you within 72 hours of discovery, as required by law.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy when something material changes about how we collect or use data. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent change. Substantive changes will be announced in the newsletter.
